For pregnant women, sugar overdose presents similar risks to tobacco consumption, says Michael I. Goran and Emily Ventura in a recent article in the Washington Post: Secondhand sugars are the new secondhand smoke. One is a professor of preventive medicine and pediatrics at the University of Southern California and co-director of the Institute for Diabetes and Obesity Research, the other is a writer, nutrition educator and advocate for public health.
A recent Canadian study of over 3,000 women showed that consuming sugary soft drinks during pregnancy doubles the chance of being overweight for the upcoming child, the two experts said.
Positive pregnancy test? Cap on sparkling water or flat water.
