A study conducted in 5 European countries by partners of UFC Que Choisir reveals that half of the tested samples of fast-food packaging in major retailers contain perfluorinated compounds or PFCs. The latter are referred by the European Union as "extremely worrying".
These tests targeted non-plastic packaging of French fries, sandwiches, burgers, dessert boxes and even pizza boxes.
Although France has not yet issued a recommendation, the study finds that, more often than not, the recovered rates exceed the daily limit recommended by the Danish authorities, one of which exceeded 10,000 times.
Why these compounds in packaging?
They are most often added by industrialists to obtain surfaces tight to fat, moisture and resistant to heat.
The risk
These compounds are directly in contact with hot foods, which increases the risk of contamination of food with potentially carcinogenic substances.
Another risk is found because of its difficult biodegradability, these substances accumulate in the environment thus amplifying the endangerment of our health.
About PFCs
They are highly suspected to be carcinogenic, immunotoxic and endocrine disrupting.
The most frequent sources of contamination: paper treated in contact with food, Teflon film in stoves, but also cleaning products: carpet cleaning product, waxes and sealants for treated floors, etc.
PFCs are in the cross-border of the European Union, but many substances belonging to the PFC family have not been studied. Since the maximum daily dose has not been fixed, no European legislation limits or prohibits these compounds for food packaging.
