Catalonia promotes the referendum on independence from Spain

كتالونيا تروّج لاستفتاء الاستقلال عن إسبانيا

The authorities in Spain's autonomous Catalonia province have sent a memorandum to embassies and foreign governments defending their independence referendum in October, saying the referendum is "legal" and represents an "opportunity" to stamp out Spain's "authoritarian past."

The territorial authorities announced that they would organize the referendum on October 1, while the central government in Spain announced that it would take all necessary measures to prevent it and consider it illegal.

The Government of Catalonia indicated in the note that it wished the date of the referendum to have been agreed with Madrid, but regretted the latter's unwillingness to do so.

She explained that the Catalan institutions considered that "the only possible way" to determine the future of the region is that citizens vote on it.

The central government and the Constitutional Court object to the referendum on the grounds that national laws prohibit this, insisting that it will challenge any attempt to "challenge" the rule of law.
